DESCRIPTION

This is a song the Lord gave me in one sitting which is unusual. I had been praying for a few years for the Lord to give me a song about Israel, but I kept feeling Him say “I don’t trust you with the issue of my heart yet.” On this day, He finally let me into this issue He feels with Israel, His Firstborn, His beloved. Out of Him showing me what He felt, the chorus is a plea for Him to take us deeper in understanding the emotions God feels towards Israel in her past, present, and future state.

DESCRIPTION

The Holy Spirit gave me this melody a few years ago which slowly developed into this song taking years to finish. The first two verses are meant to set us on edge, begging us to hear Jesus strong rebuke in Revelation 2 and 3 to the 7 churches. While seeking to remain true to the Scriptures, a little deviation was used to articulate issues in the Western church particularly–not because it’s worse, but because it’s who I am most experienced with (However, the concept should be used personally, nationally, and internationally since it is the objective word of God). While starting as a dirge, the song ends eerily with the rewards of Revelation 2-3 whispered ironically begging us to hear the Spirit’s words of hope and repent before His second coming so that we might receive those very rewards.

The Seven Churches

I hear a funeral dirge for the Western Church

I hear a song of lament… you say you’re alive but you are dead

Neither cold nor hot you say you’re clothed–you’re not!

You can’t see your wretchedness

Behold I stand and knock on the doors of your hearts

Be zealous and repent!

For those who I love I discipline

You have left your first love and become adulterous

You worship other God’s and immorality is permitted

And you’re caught between doctrines of vanity and meekness

Teaching prosperity and false blessing

But you’re ignoring My Sons death

And I am weeping over you My Bride

He who has an ear let him hear what the Spirit is saying

God is speaking turn and repent lest He remove your lampstand

To Him who overcomes:

I will grant to eat from the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God

He will not be hurt by the second death

I will give him some of the hidden manna to eat, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it

“I will give (him) authority over the nations; and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken to pieces, as I also have received from my Father; and I will give him the morning star.

I will clothe him in white garments and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father and before His angels.

I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God and he will not go out from it anymore; and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my God, and my new name.

To him who overcomes I will grant to him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also overcame and sat down with my Father on His throne.

He who has an ear let Him hear what the Spirit says to the churches!

Putting No Obstacles Before the Gospel – Day 2 Session 4

DESCRIPTION

In Mt 16:23, Jesus confronts Peter with what he calls ‘man’s interests’: “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s” (NASB). Human interests in this age, dominated as they are by self-preservation and a desire for worldly success, are completely contrary to the interests of God as embodied in the gospel—so much so, in fact, that in God’s eyes “man’s interests” are in the same category as “Satan’s interests.” Critical to the gospel’s advance, therefore, is spiritual warfare understood first and foremost in terms of dying to self: “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me” (Mt 16:24, NASB). In this session Jeremy will discuss the core nature of spiritual warfare and how to fight with “the word of truth and weapons of righteousness” (2 Co 6:7), so as to keep our lives and ministry from becoming a stumbling block to the gospel.

The Obstacle of Man’s Interests

MAN'S INTERESTS

MAN’S INTERESTS

18 “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades(physical death) will not overpower it. 19 “I will give you(future) the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” 20 Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ. (Matthew 16:18-20 NASB)

  • Jesus was encouraging Peter about his eternal inheritance in the resurrection of the age to come. He was giving the disciples confidence that death would not have the ultimate victory. ‘Gates of Hades’ would be translated ‘Gates of Sheol’ in Aramaic.

“I said in the middle of my life I am to enter the gates of Sheol; I am to be deprived of the rest of my years.” (Isaiah 38:10 NASB)

From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” (Peter was likely expecting a throne of authority with the messiah immediately-the keys of the kingdom) 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” 24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself(his interests), and take up his cross and follow Me. 25 For whoever wishes to save his life(self-preservation) will lose it; but whoever loses his life(self-control) for My sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world(worldly success) and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:21-26 NASB)

THE GOD OF THIS AGE, SATAN'S INTERESTS AND MAN'S INTERESTS

THE GOD OF THIS AGE, SATAN’S INTERESTS AND MAN’S INTERESTS

A. Self-Preservation

  1. We are told that self-preservation is human instinct, and that it is the key element in ensuring a sustainable, enjoyable, satisfying, and productive life. It means to protect and maintain all that we possess, and have achieved up to this point. It comes very natural for us to protect and preserve ourselves. There are songs written about it being first priority, and the basis for all morals. Humanistic psychology will advice it. Divorce counseling can imply it. The world’s mantra is: ‘if your not happy move on or cut the negative people out of you life.’It’s implied in the phrase: ‘Make America Great again!’“Telling us to obey instinct is like telling us to obey ‘people.’ People say different things: so do instincts. Our instincts are at war.” ~ S Lewis ~
  2. Political allegiance and gospel allegiance must be distinguished. Gospel freedom is not confined to political freedom. In fact, historically, more often gospel freedom has been found in places of political difficulty. The reason being, is that political freedom tends to produce a sense of security, along with a temptation to blend in to society.

B. Success in this age, is for this age

Do not love the world or the things that belong to the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. 16 For everything that belongs to the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s lifestyle—is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does God’s will remains forever. (1 John 2:15-17 HCSB)

C. Some Surface Questions We May Ask

  • Does this mean I need to avoid success and live like a failure?
  • What if my career demands that I climb the corporate ladder?
  • On a surface level, what you instinctively protect?
  • What kind of circumstances cause your security to feel threatened?

D. The Deeper Questions We Could Ask

  • How much motivation do you have to mature in self-control?
  • Is the reward of the age to come, compelling enough to motivate me to sojourn through the present age?

E. The Two-Sided Motivation For Self-Control

For the grace of God has appeared(1st coming) that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory(2nd coming) of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ (Titus 2:11-13 NIV)

F. The Reward of the Age to Come

and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. 16 So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man…25 As Paul talked about righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, “That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.” (Acts 24:15-16, 25 NIV)

G. The Warning of the Day of the Lord

THE PATTERN OF PERSEVERANCE, POWER, AND PARADOX (2 CORINTHIANS 6:1-10)

THE PATTERN OF PERSEVERANCE, POWER, AND PARADOX (2 CORINTHIANS 6:1-10)

And working together with Him, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain…We put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but in everything commending ourselves as servants of God, in much endurance, in afflictions…in the word of truth(gospel message), in the power of God(in our weakness); by the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and the left, by glory and dishonor, by evil report and good report regarded as deceivers and yet true; as unknown yet well-known, as dying yet behold, we live; as punished yet not put to death, as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing yet possessing all things. (2 Corinthians 6:1,3,7-10 NASB)

A. Perseverance in the Grace of God

B. Proclaim the Message of the Gospel by the Power of God

  1. Because the message is displayed in the voluntary weakness of the messenger (2 Tim 1; 1 Cor. 2)
  2. Fight the good fight by the weapons of righteousness – The sword of the Spirit in the right hand, and the shield of faith in the left hand

C. Paradox

  1. Living for the age to come in the midst of this evil age is the church’s call to be a faithful witness. Saying we live for the age to come, and actually living for the age to come are determined by how we use our time and resources.

29 And I say this, brothers: The time is limited, so from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none, 30 those who weep as though they did not weep, those who rejoice as though they did not rejoice, those who buy as though they did not possess, 31 and those who use the world as though they did not make full use of it. For this world in its current form is passing away (1 Corinthians 7:29-31 HCSB)

17 Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant(wise in their own eyes) or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God, who richly provides us with all things to enjoy. 18 Instruct them to do what is good, to be rich in good works, to be generous, willing to share, 19 storing up for themselves a good reserve for the age to come, so that they may take hold of life that is real. (1 Timothy 6:17-19 HCSB)

  • The three headed monster of living for this age in self-preservation is boasting in ‘man’s interests’ of survival wisdom, strength of the flesh, and the security of wealth.
  • The call of the gospel is dependence upon the Holy Spirit, voluntary weakness, and contentment with what we have.
  • In order to submit to the call of the gospel, we need to know how to fight the good fight with the provided weapons of righteousness as mentioned in 2 Corinthians 6.

D. Our Response

1 Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen. 2 For our ancestors won God’s approval by it (Hebrews 11:1-2 HCSB)

  1. Proclaim the gospel – Bear witness

Live the gospel – Live as a witness

Putting No Obstacles Before the Gospel – Day 2 Session 3

DESCRIPTION

As we seek to grow in our understanding in the Scriptures and “accurately handle the word of truth” (2 Ti 2:15), it is imperative that we rightly steward and humbly relate to the knowledge with which we are entrusted. Though growing in knowledge and understanding is essential to faith, a wrong pursuit and stewardship of it can actually become a stumbling block to reliance upon God. Trusting in God through the word of truth—the gospel—requires a proper pursuit of knowledge that conforms itself faithfully to both message and way of life found within. In this session David will explore the question of how to steward knowledge in ways that advance the gospel rather than hinder it.

THE GOD OF TRUTH

THE GOD OF TRUTH

27He said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His lovingkindness and His truth toward my master; as for me, the Lord has guided me in the way to the house of my master’s brothers.” (Ge 24:27 NASB)

5The Lord descended in the cloud and stood there with him as he called upon the name of the Lord. 6Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; 7who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” (Ex 34:5–7 NASB)

5Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; For You I wait all the day. (Ps 25:5 NASB)

5Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have ransomed me, O Lord, God of truth. (Ps 31:5 NASB)

10But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth quakes, And the nations cannot endure His indignation. (Je 10:10 NASB)

16“Because he who is blessed in the earth Will be blessed by the God of truth; And he who swears in the earth Will swear by the God of truth; Because the former troubles are forgotten, And because they are hidden from My sight! (Is 65:16 NASB)

A. The Hebrew word for ‘truth,’ emet, is a derivative of the word aman, where we get the word “amen,” meaning to confirm, support, uphold, or express certainty. Emet is used 127 times in the OT and means firmness or certainty, thus rendered “truth” or “faithful / faithfulness” the majority of the time.

Faithfulness is the quality that provides an appropriate ground for confidence, which gives support to trust on the part of those who depend on the faithful one. Truth is that firm conformity to reality that proves to be wholly reliable, so that those who accept a statement may depend on it that it will not turn out to be false or deceitful.[1]

11The Lord has sworn to David A truth from which He will not turn back: “Of the fruit of your body I will set upon your throne. (Ps 132:11 NASB)

B. Often in the OT, the word emet when referring to God, is closely joined with God’s merciful lovingkindness (Heb, hesed) in His relating to man. This highlights God’s enduring reliability and commitment to His covenant promises in spite of man’s unfaithful commitments; as well as shows His kindness in merciful love toward those who are bent to turn to their own way.

C. In addition to a description of God Himself and His relation to creation, the idea of emet is, in turn, required of men in relationship with Him.

14“Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. (Jos 24:14 NASB)

1O Lord, who may abide in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy hill? 2He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, And speaks truth in his heart. (Ps 15:1-2 NASB)

6Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom. (Ps 51:6 NASB)

D. Out of this same word group, we get the Hebrew word emunah, which is largely translated as “faith” or “faithful.” The term applies to God Himself (Dt. 32:4) as well as His works (Ps. 33:4) and words (Ps. 119:86). Emunah is also used to refer to the lives of men relating to God, and characteristic of those lives that are justified in God’s sight (Hab. 2:4). The truth and dependability of God and His word establishes a way for a response of trust and fidelity from the lives of men (Ps. 119:30).

E. It’s important to recognize the general categories of language associated with these ideas, as we turn to the NT ideas of “truth” and “faith.”

THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

3“Talk no more so very proudly; Let no arrogance come from your mouth, For the Lord is the God of knowledge; And by Him actions are weighed. (1 Sa 2:3 NKJV)

A. In the OT and Hebrew thought, “knowledge” means ‘coming to know’ in the process of things or experience. It is more related to a way of hearing (contra Gk. thought of ‘seeing’), and is directly connected to God. This knowledge is connected to the fear of the Lord (Prov. 1:7; 9:10; Is. 11:2).

It is thus respectful and obedient acknowledgment of the power and grace and demand of God. This means that knowledge is not thought of in terms of the possession of information. It is possessed only in its exercise or actualisation.[1]

The Christian view of knowledge is thus largely determined by the OT. An obedient and grateful acknowledgment of the deeds and demands of God is linked with knowledge of God and what He has done and demands. It is in keeping that this Christian knowledge is not a fixed possession but develops in the life of the Christian as lasting obedience and reflection. For this reason γνῶσις [‘gnosis’ – ‘knowledge’] is regarded as a gift of grace which marks the life of the Christian by determining its expression[2]

KNOWLEDGE AND FAITH IN THE WORD OF TRUTH

13In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, (Eph 1:13 NASB)

3We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints; 5because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel 6which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth; (Col 1:3–6 NASB)

3giving no cause for offense in anything, so that the ministry will not be discredited, 4but in everything commending ourselves as servants of God… 7in the word of truth, in the power of God; by the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and the left, (2 Co 6:3–7)

13But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. 14It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Th 2:13–14 NASB)

1First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, 2for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Ti 2:1–4 NASB)

1But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, 2by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, 3men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. (1 Ti 4:1–3 NASB)

24The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, 25with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, (2 Ti 2:24–25 NASB)

1But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant,…7always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (2 Ti 3:1–7 NASB)

1Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, (Tt 1:1 NASB)

26For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, (Heb 10:26 NASB)

EXPRESSED PATTERN VS ESOTERIC PURSUITS

EXPRESSED PATTERN VS ESOTERIC PURSUITS

A. Pagan & Gnostic Characteristics

  1. One of the defining markers of Gnosticism is that salvation is brought about through the deliverance of man’s ignorance by means of a secret knowledge; thus, appropriating knowledge becomes a mechanism of salvation itself.

These are the secret sayings which the living Jesus spoke and which Didymos Judas Thomas wrote down. And, he said, “whoever finds the interpretation of these sayings will not taste death.” – Gospel of Thomas, Saying 1

When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you live in poverty, and you are the poverty. – The Gospel of Thomas, Saying 3

What you seek after (is) within you. ~The Dialogue of the Savior

If you bring forth what is within you, what you have will save you. – Gospel of Thomas, Saying 70

  1. The glaring feature of this pursuit of knowledge is that it assumes deliverance can be reached from within, or in independence of an outside source of trust. Perceived master of his own destiny, man, in arrogance undertakes the task of self-deliverance through strength and intellect; as if this process could bring about the life he seeks.

B. Message and Expressed Pattern

The apostles were entrusted with a message and tradition founded on the Law and Prophets and based upon the suffering and sacrificial death of the Messiah prior to the glory of the inheritance to be given at the end of the age through the fulfillment of God’s covenant promises to Israel. This historical testimony of tradition involved both a message and pattern, or way of life, exemplified by Jesus the Messiah. Because faith involves a heart-felt commitment of trust, as well as identification and participation[1], an identifiable way of life results from knowledge of the message – repentance and trust in the gospel. The apostle Paul often appeals to and speaks of his way of life as a model of faith to communities he has established (1 Cor. 4:16-17; Phil. 3:17; 2 Thess. 3:6-7; 2 Tim. 3:10).

16Therefore I exhort you, be imitators of me. 17For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and he will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, just as I teach everywhere in every church. (1 Co 4:16–17 NASB)

10Now you (Timothy) followed my (Paul) teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, 11persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium and at Lystra (cf. Acts 14); what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me! 12Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. (2 Ti 3:10–12 NASB)

[1] See more on this in “Righteousness of God: The Challenge of Faith” in John P. Harrigan, The Gospel of Christ Crucified: A Theology of Suffering Before Glory (Paroikos Publishing, Kansas City, MO 2015).

PURSUIT, ENTRUSTMENT, PATTERN

PURSUIT, ENTRUSTMENT, PATTERN

In the first two Pastoral Epistles we see in Paul’s instruction to Timothy the closest approximations of exhortation related to the pursuit of knowledge in gospel and a stewardship of it in accord with the pattern of faith; as Timothy serves as a teacher. He is called on to steward the entrustment given to him, as well as emulate the pattern of life that is consistent with the knowledge of God through the gospel.

3As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines, 4nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith. 5But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. (1 Ti 1:3–5 NASB)

Love (cf. Matt. 22:37-40; Mk. 12:28-31; Lk. 10:27)

  • Pure Heart – repeated defilement repeatedly cleansed away; forgiveness and cleansing for continual confession of sin.
  • Good Conscience – honest self-evaluation of conduct of obedience rather than disobedience
  • Sincere Faith – trust / reliance that is genuine and (lit.) ‘without hypocrisy’

12Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. 13Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching. 14Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery. 15Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. 16Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you. (1 Ti 4:12–16 NASB)

3If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, 4he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, 5and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. (1 Ti 6:3–5 NASB)

20O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called “knowledge”— 21which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith. Grace be with you. (1 Ti 6:20–21 NASB)

13Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 14Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you. (2 Ti 1:13–14 NASB)

10For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory. 11It is a trustworthy statement: For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him; 12If we endure, we will also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He also will deny us; 13If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. 14Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. 15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. 16But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, 17and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some. 19Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.” 20Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honor and some to dishonor. 21Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. 22Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 23But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels. 24The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, 25with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, 26and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. (2 Ti 2:10–26 NASB)

13But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (2 Ti 3:13–17 NASB)

2016 Day 2 Session 3 As we seek to grow in our understanding in the Scriptures and “accurately handle the word of truth” (2 Ti 2:15), it is imperative that we rightly steward and humbly relate to the knowledge with which we are entrusted. Putting No Obstacles Before the Gospel – Day 2 Session 2

DESCRIPTION

In order for us to run the race of the Christian life with endurance, it is very important that our expectations for life in this age conform to the pattern observed in Jesus himself: “…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (Heb 12:1-3, NIV). Irrespective of where we are in our journey with the Lord, if we begin to take our eyes off of the “perfecter of our faith”—both the trials he endured, and the glory that awaited him on the other side—our expectations quickly become distorted, and we set ourselves up to become offended at God when they go unmet. In this session Richee will address the issue of unmet expectations, focusing on practical ways to keep them from becoming a source of offense toward God and an obstacle to gospel.

The Obstacle of Unmet Expectations

SINGULAR HOPE

SINGULAR HOPE

A. Simple, Yet Not-so-simple Gospel

  1. Most would define the term “gospel” as “good news”. However, not everyone agrees on the details of what the “good news” actually is. Good news brings an obvious expectation that you put a lot of faith in. And life choices are made on that expectation. But what if the good news that is expected, doesn’t deliver? What does that do to the heart? And what do those heart realities do to your daily life? How can that currently affect the way you live?
  2. Clarity of the Biblical gospel defines the expectation and then steers your faith. And out of that you make decisions and live your life. With that clear, you actually become equipped to run the race successfully in this age of death. The default is to sojourn instead of put down roots in this age. The vision becomes clear and keeps you on the track, with your eyes set on the finish line.

B. Hope/Expectation of the Messiah (cf. Rom. 2:5; 8:18; 1 Cor. 1:7; 15:23; 2 Cor. 4:17; Eph. 1:18; Phil. 3:20; Col. 3:4; 1 Thess. 1:10; 3:13; 2 Thess. 1:7; 2:1; 1 Tim. 6:14; 2 Tim. 4:8; Tit. 2:13; Heb. 9:18; 1 Pe. 1:13; 1 Jn. 2:28)

11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hopethe appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, (Tt 2:11–13 NIV)

Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. (1 Peter 1:13 NIV)

C. The Fruit of Biblical Faith in the Biblical Hope – Patient Endurance (cf. Ps. 39:7; 71:14;119:114, 166; Prov. 10:28;)

And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you. (Ps. 13:12)

Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; I wait for You all day long.

My soul longs for your salvation; I hope in your word. (Ps. 119:81)

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; (Ps. 130:5)

  1. The gospel is trying to establish one singular hope in the heart of the believer. A hope that, if anchored deep enough, can bring joy in whatever situation you find yourself in. Even joy until death because the hope believer’s have is realized beyond this age of death. There is no situation too overwhelming if our faith is anchored to the Biblical hope.

D. The Expectation – Fullness of Salvation at the End of the Age (cf. Rom. 1:16; 1 Pet. 2:2)

so also the Messiah, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him. (Heb. 9:28 HCSB)

You are being protected by God’s power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Pet. 1:5 HCSB)

  1. Salvation is a weighty topic in many circles because it involves your eternal standing. Who doesn’t want to know they are good-to-go when it comes to their salvation? But salvation did not change from the Old Testament to the New Testament. The hope remains the same; the promise of One who would come and sit on the throne in Jerusalem and restore all Creation. That promise has not yet been realized, thus we continue to hope. And it is faith in that which should drive our lives. Hebrews 11 testifies to it.

These all died in faith without having received the promises, but they saw them from a distance, greeted them, and confessed that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth. (Heb. 11:13 HCSB)

“the fact that Jesus Christ died is more important that the fact that i shall die, and the fact that Jesus Christ rose from the dead is the sole ground of my hope that I, too, shall be raised on the last day.” ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer ~

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus the Messiah, by whom we have been conceived anew—because of his great mercy—into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus the Messiah from the dead, 4for an inheritance undecaying and undefiled and unfading, stored safely in the heavens for you, 5who through faith are being protected by the very power of God for a salvation set to be revealed at the end of the age; 6on account of which you rejoice, even though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief and heartache amidst trials of various kinds, 7so that the authenticity of your faith—far more precious than perishable gold, though even with gold, it is through fire that its purity is determined—may be discovered, resulting in praise and glory and honor when Jesus the Messiah is revealed; 8the Messiah you love, even though you haven’t seen him, in whom you are placing your faith, even though you don’t see him now, and so rejoice with a joy inexpressible and full of glory,9receiving in return the goal of your faith—your salvation. (1 Peter 1:3-9 BHT)

  1. Our response to trials quickly reveal where our expectation is. Words are easily spoken but faith’s genuineness is revealed in the trials. Is our joy anchored in this present evil age and what it can give us? Especially us in the Western comforts. Or is it in what was promised long ago that has yet to realized? Are we patient as we eagerly awake the realization of a hope that will not disappoint? Or do we gaze at what gives me pleasure now and set our hope on that?
    1. Some may ask, “What is so bad about setting our hope and faith on safety, comfort and good things in the present?” Potentially everything!
    2. You don’t have to convince the depraved human heart to be self-preserving. It is searching for excuses to justify that type of behavior. But when the Spirit seeks to lead you in a way that does not lean toward self-preservation, will your heart be ready to listen and obey with simple devotion and faith? The good news of the Bible is not self-preservation in this present age! That expectation will leave many in terror at the Day of the Lord.

SINGULAR PURPOSE

SINGULAR PURPOSE

A. Holy Spirit – Giving Grace To Endure/Sojourn Until The Expectation Is Realized

22“For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. (Romans 8:22-25 ESV)

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13 HCSB)

  1. The Holy Spirit was given as a gift to get us to the end of the age full of faith in the Messiah’s coming. He strengthens us to live according to His coming. It is the Spirit who gives the grace needed to help us endure well.

B. Follow the Spirit or Follow the Flesh

  1. If we follow the flesh, we will boast in the flesh. Our expectation will be glory and comfort now with our hope anchored in the now. Our faith will be in us and steer us to temporary rewards/pleasure with eternal suffering.
  2. If we follow the Spirit, He will lead us to the cross just like He did the Messiah. There is no avoiding it if we follow the Spirit. It is what keeps our flesh at bay and allows humility to set the stage for an enduring hope and solid faith which will stand to the end and bring salvation.

For those who live according to the flesh think about the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, about the things of the Spirit…for if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:5,13 HCSB)

Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now going to be made complete by the flesh (human effort)? (Gal. 3:3 HCSB)

I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. (Gal. 5:16 HCSB)

BARRIERS TO BIBLICAL HOPE

BARRIERS TO BIBLICAL HOPE

A. Obstacles Keep Our Eyes From Looking To The Finish Line

  1. Obstacles to the gospel will always seek to set our sights on this age.
  2. Treating the Bible as a buffet to pick and choose what we like and don’t like, quickly leads to an unbiblical, near-sighted hope. We then shift our faith to that hope and lean into it’s expectation. And ultimately it steers our life and it’s decisions. Eventually it leads to unmet expectations. The hope does not get realized and the person is left offended, hurt, disillusioned, disjointed in what they believe, etc.
    1. That disappointment can be a dangerous obstacle to the gospel continuing to go forth in that person’s life. It hinders faith and lack of faith does not end well at the Day of the Lord.

B. False Gospel = Not So “Good News”

  1. A stumbling block to the gospel is actually a skewed gospel which drastically changes the Biblical expectation and hope. It can easily cause someone to stumble in their “race” toward the “finish line” with the potential of being disqualified in the end.

2 For I am jealous over you with a godly jealousy, because I have promised you in marriage to one husband — to present a pure virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your minds may be seduced from a complete and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if a person comes and preaches another Jesus, whom we did not preach, or you receive a different spirit, which you had not received, or a different gospel, which you had not accepted, you put up with it splendidly! (2 Cor. 11:2-4 HCSB)

  1. When the hope shifts away from Jesus as the coming Messiah and creates a “different Jesus” that causes us to put faith in ourselves, making us our own messiah bringing the Kingdom, we are in big trouble! It muddies the waters that simple devotion seeks to keep clear.

C. Biblical Illiteracy

  1. When we don’t study the Scriptures diligently and depend strictly on others to teach us the Word, we can be led astray.
    1. The cross and the Messiah’s coming is NOT a popular message to focus on because it doesn’t center itself on man or immediate gratification. In fact, it centers itself on a coming Judge and calls believers to embrace suffering and carry their cross daily.

1 Dear friends, this is now the second letter I have written to you; in both letters, I want to develop a genuine understanding with a reminder, 2 so that you can remember the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the command of our Lord and Savior given through your apostles. 3 First, be aware of this: Scoffers will come in the last days to scoff, living according to their own desires, 4 saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? Ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation.” (2 Peter 3:1-4 HCSB)

  1. Many are being lulled to sleep by the false gospels that are anchored in this age. They can please the flesh temporarily but will not endure the test of time. And for some trials have already tested them and left them wanting. Many unmet expectations from those gospels have already turned some away, leaving them without faith, hope or love.

14 If anyone’s work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, it will be lost, but he will be saved; yet it will be like an escape through fire. (1 Corinthians 3:14-15 HCSB)

D. Gospel Graduation

  1. The ongoing fads and trends of Western Christianity keep us on Satan’s merry-go-round of disjointed Christianity and distant from the simple devotion of the gospel. Simple listening and obeying is replaced with busyness in the “good” things of God. Ministry visions replace the time that used to be given to a gospel-centered lifestyle.

E. The Past And Pre-Conceived Ideas

11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face because he stood condemned. 12 For he regularly ate with the Gentiles before certain men came from James. However, when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, because he feared those from the circumcision party. 13 Then the rest of the Jews joined his hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were deviating from the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas in front of everyone, “If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel Gentiles to live like Jews?” (Gal. 2:11-14 HCSB)

  1. All of us have pasts. Our pasts can carry some serious wounds. I felt this was a necessary point because I have seen it again and again in sincere believers who continue to stumble because of it.
  2. Past wounds that never formed into a scar and were never healed, will remain a constant irritation under the surface. The tendency is to view everything through those those hurts. And eventually it leads to massive inflammation and a pain-filled outward cry. That cry usually comes forth and dramatically hinders the gospel witness through fear, anger, offense, retaliation, etc.

HURDLE THE BARRIERS

HURDLE THE BARRIERS

A. Study And Know The Gospel

  1. Never graduate from the gospel! It is what continues to cast the vision we desperately need in this present age. Preach the gospel to yourself, your families and to each other in your communities. Let it encourage and strengthen you through the many trials this age will throw at you.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. (Rom. 1:16 HCSB)

B. Cry Out For Grace From The Spirit, Often

C. Give Thanks To God

  1. Thanksgiving will eventually and inevitably shift your eyes to the cross and then on to the coming King and His throne in Jerusalem. Thanksgiving can quickly reset the hope if it has become out of focus.

14 We know that the One who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and present us with you. 15 Indeed, everything is for your benefit, so that grace, extended through more and more people, may cause thanksgiving to increase to God’s glory. 16 Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day. 17 For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory. (2 Corinthians 4:14-17 HCSB)

D. Sing The Scriptures

Sing to the LORD, all the earth. Proclaim His salvation from day to day. (1 Chr. 16:23 HCSB)

Putting No Obstacles Before the Gospel – Day 2 Session 1

DESCRIPTION

A clear unfolding revelation of the Biblical Gospel challenges and changes everything.  The Biblical Gospel demands repentance, change and adjustments in all areas of life, and therefore it must be rightly defined, defended and declared. As we grow and mature in our relationship with God, various obstacles arise that are actually contrary to this Biblical Gospel. In this session David will discuss, in context to his personal testimony, two issues that have great potential to impede the advance of the gospel on various levels: Faulty theological paradigms, and misguided ministry pursuits.

The Obstacle of Faulty Paradigms and Ministry Pursuits

THE GRAIN BIN @ DTN

THE GRAIN BIN @ DTN

A clear unfolding revelation of the Biblical Gospel challenges and changes everything.  The Biblical Gospel demands repentance, change and adjustments in all areas of life, and therefore it must be rightly defined, defended and declared. As we grow and mature in our relationship with God, various obstacles arise that are actually contrary to this Biblical Gospel. In this session we will discuss, in context to personal testimony, two issues that have great potential to impede the advance of the gospel on various levels: Faulty theological paradigms, and misguided ministry pursuits.

A. Contributions (Theological, practical and technical – Thank You)

B. Withdrawals (2011-2016 / Clarity, confidence and courage in the Biblical Gospel)

C. Humility (going low)

D. Hunger (going deep)

THE JOURNEY

THE JOURNEY

A. Encountered by God 1981 “Salvation” and 1983 “Rededication”

Unfortunately out of deep insecurities and brokenness I hid behind my testimony of “coming out of darkness” rather than having clarity, confidence and courage in Jesus and the Biblical Gospel.

B. Theological Education (1985-1989) CBC Columbia Bible College

I came out of Bible College with a hodgepodge of theological views and a foggy gospel like a puzzle with missing corners and no box to see the big picture. I leave four years of good theological education without having clarity in the Biblical Gospel.

C. Youth Pastor (1985-2002)

I am busy with tons of activities in the pursuit of ministries, models and movements to bring about change and surely the right ministry, model or movement is the key to revival and awakening among these students and our region. Many students walk away with a mixture of good activities and disconnected truths but no solid foundation to stand upon in the face of college liberalism or cultural relativism. Obviously without having clarity in the Biblical Gospel it becomes implausible to lead others to have confidence and courage in it as well.

D. Father Wound (1992)

After four years of theological education and now in the pursuit of full time ministry for several years, God comes to me at an adult weekend conference and reveals a deep wound specifically in connection with my father. This deep place of pain and brokenness becomes a front and center issue in my life and I began to realize that the pursuit of knowledge (theological education) as well as full time ministry were safe places for me to hide and cover up the shame, fear and pain that resided deep within me. Emotional healing is a real and necessary ministry but there must be the revelation and foundation of the Biblical Gospel to bring about inner healing and lasting change. The Biblical Gospel brings healing and stability to the wounded and broken as the heart clings to faith and hope in the redemption, resurrection and restoration of Jesus our Messiah.

E. Call to Romania (1997-2011)

After a clear and specific call to Romania I step in faith and begin the journey of training pastors and youth pastors, leading youth camps and conferences through teaching the word of God and ministering in spiritual gifts (healing and prophecy). I watch many Romanians temporarily set free of various issues but they are not staying free by coming into maturity. After many years of ministry trips there I realize that I gave away so much of myself (time, energy and resources) but I lacked to simply establish them in the Biblical Gospel.

F. Planting Churches (2002-2013)

From Burlington NC to Romania I see God begin to raise up a few churches while I am in a major pursuit of word (evangelical) and power (charismatic) ministry. In this context I am also involved in a lot of activity and pursuits of calling people to ministries, models and movements whereby we are declaring and demonstrating the kingdom of God just like Jesus, right? I eventually get very frustrated with myself and others because of a lack of depth in God and the absence of some sense of revival and awakening. Again I now realize that I did not help establish people in the Biblical Gospel.

G. IHOP-AC (2005-2013)

I begin to find depth in God and personal revival through prayer and fasting (spiritual disciplines) and I step out to pursue God and the house of prayer full time calling our region as well as many in Romania to pursue God in prayer and fasting (spiritual disciplines) … revival and awakening are sure to come. After 8 years it comes tumbling down and for me it was the pursuit of building the house of prayer with a faulty foundation of calling people to the house of prayer (prayer movement) and spiritual disciplines instead of establishing God’s people in the Biblical Gospel (NC and Romania).

H. Burning Heart Fellowship (2012-2013 / 8 months)

Before I shut down IHOP-AC I seek one more way of bringing a real and serious move of God to our region by planting another church with 20 couples (some of my best friends over the years). For sure as we build this church upon the vision and values of the house of prayer, spiritual gifts, spiritual disciplines and strong eschatology we surely have the recipe for that great move of God I have been laboring for over the years. Within 6 months I begin to sense a deep issue in my heart that something is wrong among us and several of the couples begin walking away from the church and by the 8th month my closest friends walk away as well. At this point I am disillusioned, disappointed, discouraged and distraught. What has gone wrong – what is wrong with me – what is wrong with them – what is wrong with the church?

I. The ARK Network (2013 – present)

When I look back over the years of ministry I see that I gave myself to God, His word and His people with great zeal and sincerity. I assumed by observing Christianity in the west that spiritual disciplines and spiritual gifts build ministries, models and movements that bring revival and awakening. In many ways for many years I desired to be a change agent and I fixed my hope on a brand of kingdom now – western Christianity to bring forth revival and awakening in people and the culture of this age. But it becomes obvious that I have lacked personal clarity, confidence and courage in the Biblical Gospel. Along the way on the journey August 5, 2005 God spoke to me one of the clearest and most defined words I had ever received “Build Me an Ark … Preserve My People”. After seeking the Lord for many years, in the fall of 2013 I came into greater clarity that in my later days I was to primarily “make disciples for the Day of the Lord”. The primary focus of the ark network is prayer, discipleship and missions with the heartbeat of the ministry to diligently seek for clarity, confidence and courage in the Biblical Gospel. In light of this Biblical Gospel we are to discern the times in which we live and to help give direction to God’s people as the Day of the Lord draws near. As we observe the life of Noah, I am persuaded that it is wisdom that we order our lives based on the coming crisis at the end of this age in light of the Day of the Lord and the establishment of His Kingdom.

By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. [Heb 11:7 nasb])

In this late hour, it is extremely important that we as the Body of Christ demonstrate to the world the same kind of love that God himself demonstrated for us on the cross “while we were enemies” (Rm 5:10). Failure to do so is to misrepresent the gospel, and is therefore a hindrance to it. Drawing from the challenges that he and his family have experienced while serving in the Middle East, in this session Matthew will work through various Scriptures that challenge us to show the love of Christ “still more and more” (Php 1:9)—even to our enemies. The glory of the cross that leads men to inherit eternal life, also leads to a slow painful death to self in this age. As offensive as it may be to the human mind, a willingness to die to ourselves and submit to God’s purposes in bringing difficulty to our lives is necessary if the gospel is to be faithfully represented in the church and to the world. To deny the call to share in the Messiah’s sufferings in this age is to distort the gospel, and to distort the gospel is to hinder its advance. In this session Caleb will discuss one of the crucial steps we must take to ensure that our lives don’t become a stumbling block to the gospel: Coming to terms with the cost of discipleship. False teachers exploit believers into following their example of indulging the flesh rather than crucifying it. False teachers are not going away; they will arise and deceive even to the end of the age. Each believer needs to be equipped to overcome the obstacle of falsehood, and it begins by embracing a love for the Truth in our own hearts and minds. The Spirit of Truth leads us to walk in the Truth, to deny ungodliness, to pick up our Crosses and follow Christ. There is an urgent need in in the Body of Christ for teachers and leaders who have been tried, tested and refined in the fire, who can provide an authentic example to the flock in the way of the cross. In this session Hans will discuss the vital roles that a love for the truth and a cross-centered example play in removing obstacles to the gospel. In Paul’s mind, “secret and shameful ways” (2 Co 4:2, NIV) or “underhanded methods” (2 Co 4:2, NLT) put his ministry at risk of being “discredited” (2 Co 6:3, NIV), “blamed” (2 Co 6:3, HCSB), and found “at fault” (2 Co 6:3, ESV, NET). Sincere motives on the part of God’s servants—demonstrated in context to trial and difficulty—are themselves a powerful argument in favor of the truth and credibility of gospel. The converse, tragically, is also true: Insincere motives put the gospel’s credibility at risk of being called into question, and therefore constitute a serious stumbling block to its advance. In this session Tim will discuss how extremely important it is for us to allow God to “test our hearts” (2 Th 2:4), so that when we proclaim and represent the gospel, it is clear to all that our appeal “does not spring from error or impure motives” (2 Th 2:3, NIV). [powerpress] Missions Under Cross The Olivet Discourse (Mathew 24-25; Mark 13; Luke 21) is a prophetic and apocalyptic argument against boastful ideas that the end-time fulfillment of God's promises could come to pass through the strength of man. Building upon the already assumed framework of the Law and Prophets, the intention of Jesus in the discourse is more than continued forecasting of eschatological events, but to emphasize the apocalyptic, end-time framework in order to produce a response of discipleship congruent with the God-ordained delay of the Day of the Lord. The response required of disciples of Jesus is that of a faithful, suffering witness, that follows in the example of their crucified Messiah. This teaching explores these themes against the backdrop of the life of Peter, whose fervent zeal in the strength of man was radically reoriented to follow his suffering Master, and whose writings, particularly emphasized in his account of the Olivet Discourse (Mark 13) lead us to walk down a similar path in following and proclaiming Him as we watch for His coming. The controversy traces back to the early Corinthian church. In Ephesians 4 we're reminded that Gods design and intention for spiritual gifts was to edify, mature, and unify His body. So what went wrong? I believe the problems stem from a simple theological shift. The early Church repudiated this age and embraced the age that would come following the return of Jesus. The modern Church has replaced the apostles' hope for a hope of glory and honor now in this life. This seeking of glory and honor in this age leads to worldliness and immaturity. Worldliness and immaturity coupled with spiritual gifts is disastrous. In this session we'll aim to recover a biblical framework in which spiritual gifts can function and flourish as intended by God. The life I once lived in the world had left my heart marked with dark filth and for a long time I didn't feel clean approaching the Lord (this is where the "committing adultery" happened that is referenced in Scoundrels and Sinners). It was through a progression of the Cross and Scripture that the Holy Spirit moved on me powerfully in one event and showed me the throne of God with living water flowing out from under it and it flowed right through my heart. In that moment I heard "You are made as clean as the water that flows from My throne." From that moment forward I experienced the power of the Cross and the blood shed there that truly washes a man clean, and will present us faultless on the day of Christ Jesus. It is another song that was originally just an acoustic worship song sung in our house church becoming a type of anthem for us. The song focuses on the Titus 2 blessed hope reference (which came from a text conversation with John Harrigan) and 1 Peter 1 in it's entirety being the substance of what Titus most likely had in mind. I had been praying for a few years for the Lord to give me a song about Israel, but I kept feeling Him say "I don't trust you with the issue of my heart yet." On this day, He finally let me into this issue He feels with Israel, His Firstborn, His beloved. The first two verses are meant to set us on edge, begging us to hear Jesus strong rebuke in Revelation 2 and 3 to the 7 churches. While seeking to remain true to the Scriptures, a little deviation was used to articulate issues in the Western church particularly–not because it's worse, but because it's who I am most experienced with (However, the concept should be used personally, nationally, and internationally since it is the objective word of God). While starting as a dirge, the song ends eerily with the rewards of Revelation 2-3 whispered ironically begging us to hear the Spirit's words of hope and repent before His second coming so that we might receive those very rewards. [powerpress] The Witness EP Scoundrels and Sinners is a controversial song that I knew I had to include on this first album. We decided to end the album with it, just after the Seven Churches song as if to say "We ourselves are included in this rebuke from Jesus!" To sing "I have looked at pornography" as the first line of a song doesn't really fit with a pop-culture christianity, and makes a lot of people uncomfortable. That's ok. For me, this song is an anthem of the truth of my filth and the glory of Christ Jesus receiving a harlot like me... and if I stand firm to the end this adulterous cheating drunkard will be clothed in the glory of His resurrection on the day He appears. We desired the focus to be removed from our problems, issues, and circumstances, and placed upon the Lamb of God, on the Cross, in order to allow the Holy Spirit to speak to us through the songs. Our hope was that this song could project one through the remainder of the album taking to heart what would be sung. [powerpress] The Cruciform Life of Christ In this teaching we seek to observe the nature of the Creator God in choosing to make His brutal execution on the Cross the highest defining characteristic of His identity. We attempt to peer beyond creation with verses such as "The Lamb who was slain before the foundations of the earth," and look at the substance of God's life on the earth in His Son. We try to gain a fresh perspective of the Cross through asking the question of "why?" instead of "what?" observing the fact that before God created, within the nature of the Godhead there existed the qualities of the Cross–That the Cross is inherently a part of God, His very identity is attached to it, and it is not merely an abstract idea He enacted for salvation.
