REVIEW

    1. Last week was marked by cycles of rebellion and disobedience. You would think that God would forsake his plans, but the next section opens with Yahweh remaining faithful to his covenant people.

CHAPTERS 22-24: HEBREW POETRY

    1. Balak asks Balaam to curse Israel.
    2. Balaam says that he can only say and do what the Lord commands
    3. Balaam eventually goes with Balak and on the way the angel of the Lord stands in the way and Balaam’s donkey sees Him
    4. The donkey talks and then Balaam sees the angel and falls on his face
    5. Finally Balaam goes to curse and only blessings come out. This happens twice
    6. By the third time, Balaam recognizes God’s plan to bless the Israelites and he takes up a discourse of extended blessings. Then Balaam tell what will happen in the last days.
    7. These blessings become a messianic prophecy. Let’s look at it:

CHAPTER 25: SINFUL COMPROMISE THAT BALAAM INSTIGATED

    1. Behold, these, on Balaam’s advice, caused the people of Israel to act treacherously against the Lord in the incident of Peor, and so the plague came among the congregation of the Lord. Numbers 31:16 (ESV)

CHAPTER 26: CENSUS OF NEW GENERATION THAT WILL ENTER THE LAND

    1. None from the previous generation is alive to be counted
    2. But among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. For the Lord had said of them, “They shall surely die in the wilderness.” And not a man was left of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. Numbers 26:64–65 (NAS)

CHAPTER 27: A LAW OF INHERITANCE

    1. The daughters of Zelophehad
    2. Moses is allowed to see the promised land
    3. Moses asks that a leader be given in his place
    4. May the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, who will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the Lord will not be like sheep which have no shepherd.” So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the conguregation, and commission him in their sight. “You shall put some of your authority on him, in order that all the congregation of the sons of Israel may obey him. Numbers 27:16–20 (NAS)

CHAPTER 28-29: LAWS ABOUT OFFERINGS

CHAPTER 30: LAWS ABOUT VOWS

    1. Numbers is hard to systematize. It has narrative sections and sections of laws intermingled throughout. Laws and narratives throughout seem connected.

CHAPTER 31: THE SLAUGHTER OF MIDIAN

    1. In this chapter we see two references to our old friend Balaam. The first tells of his fate
    2. They killed the kings of Midian along with the rest of their slain: Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian; they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword. Numbers 31:8 (NAS)
    3. The second reference explained that he counseled the Israelites to worship Baal and to mingle themselves with the Moabite women creating compromises.
    4. they left some of the spoil over which they were not to do and Moses had to intervene so that there would be no mingling and that the plan of God not be hindered.

CHAPTER 32: REUBEN AND GAD SETTLE IN GILEAD

    1. Instead of going across the Jordan to the land of promise, these two tribes asked to settle in the land just before entering.
    2. This was granted
    3. The only stipulation was that when the rest of Israel goes to battle, they have to join them and aid Israel in the battle.

CHAPTER 33: 40 YEAR JOURNEY

    1. A retelling of the 40 year journey in the wilderness; ends with instructions for dividing the land they are about to enter, and instructions to remove all idols and high places.

CHAPTER 34: FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO DIVIDE THE LAND

CHAPTER 35: THE CITIES GIVEN TO THE LEVITES; CITIES OF REFUGE

CHAPTER 36: INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT INHERITANCE

CONCLUSION

    1. The book closes with the Israelites ready to at last cross the Jordan and to enter the promised land. But before they go, Moses gives one last word of wisdom, instruction, and warning. That is the book of Deuteronomy.
