A. The impartial administration of what is merited whether reward or punishment.
B. Being just, impartial or fair.
C. Justice can be an action.
D. Justice can be a verdict, a repercussion for actions committed.
E. It can be done unto you or done by you.
1. Vindicate the weak and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and destitute. Psalm 82:3
A. True and eternal justice will not be given until the day of Judgment.
1. I kept looking, and that horn was waging war with the saints and overpowering them until the Ancient of Days came and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One, and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom. Daniel 7:21-22
a. Understood was that when the Ancient of Days intervened against the kingdoms of this world was the day when judgment from God was handed out. The saints were declared righteous and the wicked would be thrown into the lake of fire.
2. And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone Revelation 12:20
3. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:15
4. But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment Matthew 12:36
5. then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment 2 Peter 2:9
6. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; Let the sea roar, and all it contains; Let the field exult, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy Before the Lord, for He is coming, For He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness And the peoples in His faithfulness. Psalm 96:11-13
A. There is a way in which we are to conduct ourselves that is pleasing to God.
B. The Lord is able to work through the agencies of man to establish righteous ways of living. Ways that emulate the way God would have us treat each other
C. Some would call this adhering to the Torah.
1. So you shall keep His statutes and His commandments which I am giving you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may live long on the land which the Lord your God is giving you for all time.” Deuteronomy 4:40
2. To do righteousness and justice Is desired by the Lord more than sacrifice. Proverbs 21:3
3. Thus says the Lord, “Preserve justice and do righteousness, For My salvation is about to come And My righteousness to be revealed Isaiah 56:1
4. Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight. Cease to do evil, Learn to do good; Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless, Defend the orphan, Plead for the widow Isaiah 1:16-17
5. Thus says the Lord, “Do justice and righteousness, and deliver the one who has been robbed from the power of his oppressor. Also do not mistreat or do violence to the stranger, the orphan, or the widow; and do not shed innocent blood in this place. Jeremiah 22:3
A. Who decides what true Justice looks like?
B. One man’s justice is another man’s injustice.
C. Yahweh alone is just and true, able to deal justly without bias or mixture.
1. The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He. Deuteronomy 32:4
2. Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. Isaiah 42:1
3. Arise, O God, judge the earth! For it is You who possesses all the. nations Psalm 82:8
4. For the Lord your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe. “He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing Deuteronomy 10:17-18
A. Everyone wants justice to be done, believer and unbeliever alike.
B. Most believers, though not all, would agree that we need Jesus to establish true justice
C. Many would espouse this to be the case, but in practice, it may show something different.
D. Certainly, there are times when the Lord will stay the hand of the wicked or punish wicked behavior in this age. But Justice is yet to be served as it will come at the day of Judgment.
1. Many seek the ruler’s favor, But justice for man comes from the Lord. Proverbs 29:26
E. When we are the ones being oppressed, or our family, will we still wait patiently for God to establish justice?
1. Do not say, “I will repay evil”; Wait for the Lord, and He will save you. Proverbs 20:22
A. We all want Justice. But we only think temporally. God thinks eternally.
B. We want Justice to be given to those who oppress us, but probably don’t want Justice given to ourselves
C. We think criminals deserve justice, bad people deserve Justice, but we don’t want justice for our family member or friends.
D. Everyone wants justice for the murderer, but according to Jesus’ standard you are the murderer.
1. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court Matthew 5:22
C. Justice is a serious issue that man has been trying to regulate and dish out, but no man is actually qualified to do such a thing in a way that is fully pleasing to God.
D. True Justice can only be given by God.
1. For the word of the Lord is upright, And all His work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord. Psalm 33:4-5
A. The Lord loves to show mercy. But the wicked will not go unpunished forever.
1. (Abraham) “Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?: Genesis 18:25
2. Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the land. Jeremiah 23:5
3. Thus says the Lord, “Preserve justice and do righteousness, For My salvation is about to come And My righteousness to be revealed. Isaiah 56:1
A. Jesus will judge righteously and make a distinction between the godly and ungodly on the day of his return.
1. It was also about these men that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones, to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” Jude 14-15
2. For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you 2 Thessalonians 1:6
3. But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. Isaiah 11:4
A. He is a just judge and the only one worthy to fulfill such a role.
1. And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead. Acts 10:42
A. When we see a lack of justice, or perceived lack of justice, the heart of man is tested.
B. Like a good father, He disciplines in this age to keep us from eternal judgement/justice at His return.
C. In His mercy He continually tests the heart of man, so that they can stand before Him blameless on the day of judgment.
1. each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:13
D. Because the justice of God is ultimately revealed at the day of the Lord, the righteous will endure mistreatment, often with no justice, at least without true justice, until Jesus returns.
E. This is intentional.
F. It tests the hearts of the righteous to reveal genuine faith or not, and offers mercy towards the wicked in hopes that they repent before the judgment day.
1. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
G. If we all receive what we justly deserve, we’d all end up in the lake of fire. But the mercy of God, through the provision in the cross, enables us to not receive what we deserve.
H. When He returns, He will vindicate all the oppressed. He will vindicate the righteous who were persecuted unjustly for His name.
1. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked will perish. Psalm 1:5-6
C. The dark night is almost over. Hold on! Press on! He is coming!
1. And it will be said in that day, “Behold, this is our God for whom we have waited that He might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.” Isaiah 25:9
