<div>5Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7The LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. <li>Noah’s sacrifice (20) as a soothing aroma (cf. Lev. 1:9; 2:2; 3:5) and God’s promise to “not curse the ground any further” <sup>2</sup> nor “smite every living thing” on account of man and his continued inclination toward evil from youth (21).</li>

THE JUDGMENT OF THE FLOOD (GEN 6-8)

<ul>
<li>3x &#8211; God blesses humanity (1:28; 5:2; 9:1), tells them to be fruitful and multiply (1:28; 8:17; 9:1)</li>
<li>3x – God will “require” the life of man (Ps. 9:12; Ezek. 33:6) – his brother’s life (cf. 4:8-11). Even animals that take human life are included (Ex. 21:28-29).</li>
<li>Partners of the covenant (5 ways): you and every living being with you (12), the earth (13), you and every living being among all flesh (15), every living being among all flesh which is on earth (16), all flesh which is on the earth (17).</li>
<li>Sign of the covenant – setting His bow in the clouds (13)<sup>3</sup> – to remind Him of His promises (16).</li>

<p><sup>3</sup> “Since the word for rainbow is the same Hebrew word as that used for the bow weapon, this offers an interesting image. The bow was often in the armory of the divine warrior in the ancient Near East. Earlier I discussed that the Flood was often viewed in extrabiblical sources as destruction carried out by the gods in anger. This is not the biblical picture, but it is a pregnant image to have God hanging up his bow. This should not change our interpretation of the rainbow, but it does hint at other subtle images and nuances floating in the background.” [John H. <div>9:21 – Wine and drunkenness– often associated with sexuality in biblical literature (Song 1:2, 4; 2:4; 4:10; 5:1; 7:9; 8:2; 2 Sam. 11:11-13). The only other reference to drunkenness in Genesis is the incest of Lot and his daughters (19:30-38).</div>

<div>9:21 – Uncover – the word is used particularly in sexual contexts (Lev. 18; 20:11; Dt. 22:30). Perhaps in preparation for intimacy with his wife in light of the twice reiterated commands to be fruitful and multiply (9:1, 7).</div>

<div>9:22 – saw the nakedness of his father – “to see nakedness” or “to uncover nakedness” is a Heb. euphemism for heterosexual intercourse.7 “The nakedness of his father” is a biblical idiom for the nakedness of his father’s wife (Lev. 18:14, 16; 20:11, 21)8:</div>

<li>7‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, that is, the nakedness of your mother. She is your mother; you are not to uncover her nakedness. 8‘You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife; it is your father’s nakedness. (Le 18:7–8 NASB95)</li>

<li>9:22, 24 – “told his brothers” / “what his youngest son had done to him”9 – in ancient Near Eastern cultures this was a threat to patriarchal authority and a means of usurping a father / leader’s position (Gen. 35:22; 49:3-4; 2 Sam. 3:6-10; 12:8; 16:20-23; 1 Ki. 2:13-25). Perhaps not lust, but a power-play to boast about to his brothers.10</li>
<li>9:23 – took the garment….covering the nakedness of their father – actions coincide with both the idiom and the literal aspects of the phrase “see their father’s nakedness.”</li>
<li>
<div>9:25 – Noah curses Canaan, Ham’s son to be ‘the slave of slaves.’11 While three interpretations give no explanation to why Ham himself is not cursed, the maternal incest view could give explanation: Noah curses the product of this illicit union between Ham and his wife. This could also show why there are multiple references in the narrative of “Ham, the father of Canaan” (18, 22) – showing how he became the father of Canaan.</div>
</li>
<li>
<div>Canaan – most antagonistic historical enemies of Israel and polemicized against in the Torah (Gen. 24:1-3; 34:30-31; Ex. 23:23-24; 33:2; Dt. 7:1-5; 20:17-18. There also seems to be a connection between these origins and the practices of the sons of Ham in the opening of Lev.18:3 – which explicitly deals with incestuous along with general sexual sins.</div>

<div>Within Genesis, right after two events of divine judgment (coming upon sexual sins among others) (Gen. 6-8 – Flood / Gen. 19 – Sodom), there seem to be two events of illicit relationships (Gen. 9:18ff – Ham and 19:30ff – Lot’s Daughters) that produce some of Israel’s main adversaries: Canaanites / Moabites, Ammonites.</div>

<li>9:26-27 – Blessing of YHWH as the God of Shem (election blessing through Shem cf. Gen. 24:27; Ex. 3:15, etc.). May He enlarge (yaft) Japhet (leyefet) is a play on his name. “He” dwelling in the tents of Shem – God (some Jewish traditions Tg. Onq. / Jubilees) or Japhet as the subject? Canaan will be their servant.</li>
